We have a newly created Facebook group (creatively called "Purple Porch Members" - got a better name?). Since this is for Members only, you'll need to click on the link and "Ask to Join Purple Porch Members." Then, as long as you're a member of the Co-op, you'll get approved and you can join the virtual conversation. This is an organic thing (not certified - Ha Ha). Not a lot of rules a the get go. But the goal is for it to be useful to our Co-op community.

IMPORTANT: If you don't want an email each time someone sneezes on this group - be sure to adjust your "Notifications" appropriately. After approved - look for the "Notifications" button in the upper right corner.

Not on Facebook? Well, maybe this is a good reason to take the plunge. No? OK - you're still important to the organization. Maybe you could help get a bulletin board set up at the Co-op to serve the same purpose.

FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each has witnessed the rapid transformation of our agriculture into an industrial model, and confronted the consequences: food contamination, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and morbid obesity. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision for a future of our food and our planet.

Among several main characters, FRESH features urban farmer and activist, Will Allen, the recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner, David Ball, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy.

A New Future: An accessible food store that is open throughout the week in downtown South Bend that is focused on selling locally-produced foods and other sustainably-produced foods. And a bonus: a cafe/deli will offer locally-inspired prepared foods.

Nurtured Vision: We are committed to the Producer - Consumer relationship. We will continue to have a weekly distribution time when we get to know our food.

Co-op will now offers some Certified Organic bulk foods

The Co-op now has some new products listed online - filter "Bulk Products". The Co-op will offer select bulk food from a distributor in Pullman, Michigan (about 65 miles away) called CountryLife Natural Foods.

Here's how it works:

Members may order these products through the online system.
The products will be listed with everything else on a weekly basis. Place an order by February 20 (updated each month).
Members will pay - up front - along with the rest of their weekly order.
Members pick up at the Co-op the Wednesday following delivery form CountryLife - February 29 or March 7 (TBA). Updated each month.
Products, in general, will be in large quantities (like 5 or 20 pound bags of rice) - this helps with lower prices. Members are encouraged to buy large quantities and split with other Members.
Criteria for selected products:

Our existing producers do not currently offer it
Product will be removed if local producer is able to produce it.
Products will be high quality
Food will be USDA Certified Organic
Every effort will be made to convey the origin of the product to Members.
Will not include fresh fruit or vegetables

Same Update on Member Investment (Fee) and Surcharge

Thank you for your patience this past Wednesday as we started a new surcharge system.

The Board recently approved an increase in Member fees. Starting February 1st, the new annual fee - which will now be called the Member Investment - is $40. If you already paid for this year, you won't have to pay the new amount until next time. And...The sales surcharge is changing slightly. Members that place an order online will continue to pay 4% (no change) on their total order (and extras). Members that do not place an order online, but come in for extras will pay 6% to the Co-op for that purchase. And those that are non-members will pay a 10% surcharge.

Why the increases? The Board recognizes that costs everywhere have increased, and the Co-op does not exist in a vacuum. These increases imposed on our customers will help offset our costs and help ensure sustainability of the Co-op. And, those that do chose to commit financially as a Member, will receive the benefit of a lower surcharge.

Check out a new feature that promotes our Members' businesses. Members with a personal business can advertise their businesses to fellow Members. A way for our Members to market to like-minded people. For an administration fee of $20, Members can place a posting on our online ordering system - not selling anything directly, but an ad with contact information (subject to editing).

On the products page, look for the "Member Services" category all the way a the bottom. We have one business - Ecological Babies. We'd love to see more. Contact Greg.

New Producer - Kat's Hot Cakes

At Kat’s Hot Cakes, we make you treats that taste like they couldn’t possibly be healthy, but they are. We use all natural, organic ingredients and everything is 100% vegan. That means our food is cholesterol free! There are also no preservatives. Your dessert is rarely good for you but with ingredients like whole wheat, flax, bran, carob, walnut, and banana to name a few, Kat’s Hot Cakes takes the guilt out of baked goods. New Producer - Scherf Farms Dairy

Scherf Farms is a family owned and operated dairy / creamery located near Michigan City, Indiana. Peter and Rhonda Scherf produce your milk from start to finish. From feeding and milking the cows to filling the milk bottles we personally perform the whole operation.

You may be asking yourself, so what's special about Scherf Farms dairy products. We are unique from many other dairies and creameries in Indiana, here's how:

Lower prices - because we're a cooperative, we can use our buying power to keep prices lower (compared with similar organic products in area groceries).
Improve revenue for the Co-op - as we continue to grow

Here's how it will work:

Members may order these products through the online system.
The products will be listed with everything else on a weekly basis. Place an order by February 20 (updated each month).
Members will pay - up front - along with the rest of their weekly order.
Members pick up at the Co-op the Wednesday following delivery form CountryLife - February 29 or March 7 (TBA). Updated each month.

Soup Swap I

Thanks to all those that participated - we had 9 Members bring soup and take soup home. Soups included: Potato Soup, Cranberry Bean Soup, Pumpkin Potato Soup, Lentil Soup, Santa Fe Soup, Onion Beef Soup, Vegetarian Chilli, Sweet Potato Soup - Can't wait to try some. Lets make this an annual event!

Starting with next week's ordering cycle the Co-op will have some new products listed online. The Co-op will offer select bulk food from a distributor in Pullman, Michigan (about 65 miles away) called CountryLife Natural Foods.

Why are we doing this?

The products will be listed with everything else on a weekly basis, but we will accumulate orders over four weeks, and a large order will be placed monthly with the distributor. Dates will be clearly indicated.
Members will pay - up front - along with the rest of their weekly order.
Members pick up at the Co-op the Wednesday following delivery form CountryLife - again, dates will be clear.
Products, in general, will be in large quantities (like 5 or 20 pound bags of rice) - this helps with lower prices. Members are encouraged to buy large quantities and split with other Members.
Criteria for selected products:

Our existing producers do not currently offer it
Product will be removed if local producer is able to produce it.
Products will be high quality
Food will be USDA Certified Organic

None of this changes the way we run Wednesday distributions - you will still have the same opportunities to develop relationships with quality, local food producers.

Soup Swap I

January 25
To celebrate Soup Month (that's January, in case you didn't know) we are having an inaugural Soup Swap on Wednesday, January 25.

Members only please
Starts at 6:00 pm - No purchase necessary - Not able to get there at 6? You can still participate, but no guarantee on there being much of a selection when you get there.
Bring 4 quarts of frozen soup - use individual quart Ziploc bags, or the like. Please label appropriately - soup name, your name, vegetarian, vegan, meat, gluten-free...
Tell the group what is special about your creation
We'll draw numbers - that will determine the order in which we each select 4 other quarts of soup to take home

Don't forget to order some nice bread from The Fair Bakery, Ceres Organics or Bagels from Bagelburgh Bagels to go with your soup.

Earth Friendly Eating, 5th edition

Saturday, January 21 11:00am - 3:00pm, Main Library. Rekindle your earth friendly spirits with Co-op member Judith Rubleske, R.N./Nutritionist with WIC, and keynote speaker, Mark VanTil, Niles Community Garden Director. Local food growers/producers and restaurateurs will be there as well.

Why our Co-op Rocks - Your Donations to the "Food Fund"

We recently made it very obvious for those ordering to also donate to the Co-op's charitable food fund. Since we did that about three months ago, your generosity has grossed roughly $500. That is amazing! And that does not even count the round up change at checkout.

This is a good time to remind you that your donations (albeit not tax-deductible) are going, in total, to purchasing food from our producers and donating it to the charitable organizations that distribute food to low/no-income folks in our community. These organizations include the South Bend YWCA, Center for the Homeless and Broadway Christian Parish.

The Purple Porch Co-op connects consumers and producers in a just food cooperative. We value locally sourced food, transparency, sustainability, and community focus.

Congrats Jake's!

Jake's Country Meats, a Purple Porch producer, was recently Animal Welfare Approved. According to that organization's site,

Animal Welfare Approved has the most rigorous standards for farm animal welfare currently in use by any United States organization. Its standards have been developed in collaboration with scientists, veterinarians, researchers, and farmers across the globe to maximize practicable, high-welfare farm management. Animal Welfare Approved’s standards incorporate best practice and recent research and have been adopted only after rigorous review. The basic premise of all the standards is that animals must be able to behave naturally and be in a state of physical and psychological well-being.

We hope that this will allow us to be more open to new people - that is to NOT require membership to shop at the Co-op - but to have an incentive for joining as a member. A Benefit to Membership is a much lower surcharge. This is very similar to what many cooperatives do nationwide. And, since the online system is meant to make the producers' lives easier (knowing what they need to bring in) we want to give a reward to Members that do use that process.

Community Potluck Tonight (Friday)

January 13 at 6:00 pm
Our good friend, and committed Purple Porch volunteer, Juliana Martinez is planning to leave for Columbia this month to attend medical school. We'd like the upcoming community potluck to be a time to say farewell and thank you to Juliana. Her friendliness, dedication to helping make PPC a success, along with her many talents (especially making watermelon smoothies) will be sorely missed. Bring a dish to share on the 13th to help celebrate and wish Juliana well.

New Mission Statement

Celebrate National Tea Month with a free cup of tea!

This Wednesday - January 18.

In celebration of January, Hot Tea Month, Great Horse Teas is offering free cups of tea to all Purple Porch Members on Wednesday January 18th. We will also be providing samples of one of 'Moroccan Mint,' our newest blend made with organic spearmint from 'The Fair Bakery', on Wednesday, January 25th. Keep an eye out for sales as many of our most popular teas will be discounted this month!

Not only is tea a good way to warm up a cold winter day, it also helps to:

Prevent Colds and Flu - Black Teas, especially 'Black Star' with anise, a natural antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal spice

Animal Welfare Approved has the most rigorous standards for farm animal welfare currently in use by any United States organization. Its standards have been developed in collaboration with scientists, veterinarians, researchers, and farmers across the globe to maximize practicable, high-welfare farm management. Animal Welfare Approved’s standards incorporate best practice and recent research and have been adopted only after rigorous review. The basic premise of all the standards is that animals must be able to behave naturally and be in a state of physical and psychological well-being.

New Product

Whole Pekin Duck - Tender, delicately-flavored Duck. The most popular duck on the market, the Hebrons' succulent Pekin is a favorite for roasting and can easily be paired with fruits in any season. Chefs love it for its versatility—its tender, delicately-flavored meat adapts well to a wide range of cuisines, from Asian to classic French—even Persian. Their ducks are raised without any growth hormones, steroids or antibiotics on the Hebrons' Farm.

Help producers know what you'd like to see for next year. There will be some seed catalogs at the front of the room - pretend it is Christmas already - and jot down a list of things you'd like producers to grow next year. Doesn't guarantee it, but they do want to meet the demand as much as possible.

"Pie Day"

My family (Greg, Krista, Madlean and Owen) celebrated a traditional Thanksgiving meal last Sunday - that was the timing that worked best. Therefore, my immediate family decided to do something new for the Thanksgiving Day - still enjoying good food. Why not eat PIE all day? Sounds good, doesn't it. It sure was. And as it turns out, almost all of the ingredients were from local farmers (mostly Purple Porch producers).

As we pointed out at the end of the day - we were 4 for 4! And as you can see from the sizes, we have leftovers.

Pie #1: Quiche - (Greg's creation) used local eggs and milk, Broccoli from Rise Up Farms, Cauliflower and Whole wheat flour from Family Farms Co-op, Kale from our garden

Pie #2: Pumpkin Pie (baked by Madlean) - used pumpkin from BackYard Produce, local eggs/cream and Whole wheat flour via Family Farms Co-op

Pie #3: Shepherd's Pie (a delicious new version by Krista) - used Sweet Potatoes and Carrots from Family Farms Co-op, Turnips from Rise Up Farms, Leeks and Tomatoes from our garden,

Pie #4: Apple Cobbler Pie (baked by Owen) - used Lehman Orchard's apples, Whole wheat flour via Family Farms Co-op

Pie Day can be any day - and it is so easy to source from the abundance in our region. Try it.

Erin is relatively new to the Co-op - but you may have already seen her at the greeter table. Thank you Erin for identifying a need and stepping up to fill it. ~Greg, General Manager

You open your eyes and see that you’re in a garden. This garden could be a few pots on a shelf under some compact fluorescent lights, or it might be a sprawling mini-farm containing all of the vegetables and small fruits that you require for the year. You pick a lettuce leaf, an herb sprig, or a strawberry, and stick it in your mouth, fully confident that the item was lovingly grown in an organic, natural way. “Who’s garden am I in?” you may wonder. The answer, I hope, is that you are in your own garden.

You are invited to attend a Member brainstorming session in tandem with our monthly potluck.
The Board and Manager met last week to brainstorm our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT, for those that know the lingo).

With your thoughts/ideas in hand, the Board will work with the Small Business Development Center to take the data collected and form a set of goals for the next 3-5 years. This will point us in the right direction and help us from getting off path.

Plus, there is a LangLab concert immediately following.

NEXT Saturday, November 19, is our Third-Saturday-of-the-Month market. Ordering will take place the previous week - Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 8:00 am through Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 10:00 pm. Great time for your Thanksgiving food needs - especially if Wednesday is a challenge.

Call to Action - Advocate for a reasonable Farm Bill

Only once every 5 years do you have the opportunity to truly transform our food and farm system through the federal farm bill. On Monday this week, the Agriculture Committee leadership proposed to rewrite the food and farm bill in 2 weeks, with a deadline of November 1st. Lugar/Stutzman have proposed $40 billion cuts to USDA. Some of those will harm small family farms.

The Farmers Market Promotion Program is one of a handful of programs with a zero baseline after 2012, meaning that it could disappear altogether unless we speak up. Now.

Please take 10 minutes out of your work day contact to your Senators and Congresspersons, in particular if they serve on an Agriculture Committee - Senator Lugar (IN), Senator Stabenow (MI) Representative Marlin Stutzman (IN-3rd). Ask them to support programs that help small farmers - like the Farmers Market Promotion Program.

That is a question we will be answering together as the Co-op begins the process of developing a long-range plan (3-5 year). The Board and Manager will be meeting tonight (October 21) to brainstorm our Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Mike Keen, of the Center for a Sustainable Future will be facilitating. Soon after, we will have a similar opportunity for members and producers to do the same. Date TBA.

Yeah, this sounds a little corporate. But guess what - cooperatives are businesses too. And it just makes sense, given our size, growth and potential, to be more systematic about our future. But it starts with OUR ideas, needs and wishes. Pleas help in this process and come out to do a little brainstorming when the call is put out.

Then, we will work with the Small Business Development Center to take the data collected and form a set of goals for the next 3-5 years. This will point us in the right direction and help us from getting off path.

Producer Feature - Springhope Farm

Springhope Farm is nestled in the rolling hills of Southwest Michigan's fruit growing region -Galien, MI. They have about twenty acres of fruit trees including Apples, Cherries and Peaches. They use conventional farming practices in combination with mechanical and organic solutions to bring you a high quality product for you and your family to enjoy. Bob and Carin are now in their third fruit season with the Co-op. We are lucky to have them.

Farm Tour
Sunday 10/2 -- Springhope Farm - Not a formal gathering - they are open 10am - 6pm. Go on a hay ride, pick some apples, talk with Bob about his apples.
From South Bend: Take The 31 by-pass north to Michigan exit 3. Head west on US 12 10 miles to Cleveland Ave. Then turn left. Heading south on Cleveland 1 1/2 miles to Springhope Farm.

Our Take on "Organic"

The members of the Purple Porch Co-op value organically grown/raised food - minimizing our personal exposure to synthetic chemicals and minimizing potential harm to the environment. As you probably know, the term "organic" is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). That is, there are rules about who can, and cannot, use the term - regardless of how one actually grows the food. Without getting into all the details of that regulation here, we want to make sure you know how the terms are used on the Co-op listings.

The Co-op, as a policy, does not attach a value judgment to producers that have chosen the "certified" route versus those that have chosen to not certify their organic methods. The Co-op does provide a venue (online and in person) where relationships between consumers and producers form. And that is the true value of our Co-op.

Unless specifically identified as "Certified Organic," the use of the term "organic" on the website is meant to describe food grown with organic methods (but non-USDA certified) and products with ingredients that were grown using organic methods (non-USDA certified) and/or ingredients that are certified organic. Almost entirely, "organic methods" means no synthetic chemicals used. For some producers it means even more - ask them.

Products that have no indication as to being "organic", "Certified Organic", "Chemical-free", "Spray-free" (or something similar) should be assumed to have been grown more conventionally. The producer will indicate that they used synthetic chemicals, if in fact they have. Please ask the producer for more information. They have been selected as Purple Porch producers because of their cooperation with our need for transparency.

One of the orginal goals of this Co-op was to become a market-force in our local food system. Agenda being created. We will at least be voting on the one-year Director for the Board. The current Board has nominated Pat Rowan to continue in that position for another year. We do need the Membership to vote on that. Voting members will be able to vote on Board members and issues. But all are welcome to enjoy good food together and discuss the good things about the Co-op and where we can improve. Your voice is welcome and necessary!

Not sure if you're a "Voting Member?" Have you been volunteering? That's a starting point. Then, if you have volunteered for 18 hours this year - you have a vote! Other non-voting members are extremely welcome to join the festivities! The more, the merrier!

We're having a promotion called "Double It" - as in - Double our membership. We've been growing for 2 years, but we know there are many more future members out there. We're at about 225 members now, so the goal is 450 members by the end of the year.

To help get us there, we've got a couple of incentives for current members.

Bring a friend to the Co-op. Friend buys something and YOU get a free loaf of bread or dozen eggs on your next order.
If that friend joins the Co-op, you get a $10 gift certificate to use for any Purple Porch Co-op order.

No limit! But just two restrictions, to be fair, your friend must buy something when they visit and s/he cannot be a member of your household.This is easy - If every current member does this once, we're there!

How long are we doing Saturdays? Well, it depends on the weather. The sooner the first hard frost comes, the sooner we are to stop doing Saturdays. Perhaps one day, we'll make Saturdays be an year-long event. But for now, the current interest (from both producers and customers) doesn't really justify staying open through the winter.

Below is one of the graphs that you'll see. "A" shows a difference in when CSAs were purchased - a spike in 2010 and more spread out over time in 2011. "B" shows that 2010 and 2011 had similar increases with the seasonal offerings; but the difference is likely due primarily to the Saturday market.

This summer, as co-op members travel near and far, consider taking a picture of you in your shirt for a summer "Where in the World" contest. New Producer: Molter Family Orchard

Molter Family Orchards has grown out of a vision Aaron Molter had back in 2007 to farm organically on the acres that had been farmed by three generations of his family before him. As the land had been allowed to rest for many years, Aaron was able to begin farming and become organically certified in 2008. Since then, he and his wife, Kari, have worked to maintain healthy soil and produce quality fruit. The farm consists of approximately 25 acres of fruit trees (apples, sweet cherries, peaches and plums). They have sold their fruit to numerous local co-ops for the past 3 years, as well as Whole Foods, and are now excited to be able to offer a wider selection of fruits and vegetables to the local community! In season, they open the farm up for u-pick (hayrides on the weekends during apple season) and picnics.

USDA Certified Organic through MOSA since 2008, Molter Family Orchards is run by Aaron Molter in Watervliet, MI (40 miles from South Bend in SW Michigan). Special care is taken to maintain soil balance and produce a quality organic product. In 2011 the farm was MAEAP Verified in Cropping.

ArtBeat: a success in several ways

The second year in a row for delicious local watermelon coffee slushees and making a profit for the Co-op budget! More importantly - we talked to a lot of new people about the Co-op. It has become a wonderful opportunity for us to reach out and educate the public about our Co-op.

THANK YOU! We had a GREAT troop of volunteers - some of us stayed up till 1:00 am juicing watermelons. Jed Walls (and daughter), Juliana Martinez, Quinn Lathrop, Sara Cavadini, Sarah VanSickle, Shawn and Julia Warkentin, Tama Crisovan and Greg Koehler. Prepping the watermelon and coffee concoctions the night before was a huge help.

THANK YOU! for the volunteers that pushed slushees on Saturday and talked up the Co-op with the public. Green Market?

You have likely seen our new signs that have "Green Market" with an arrow pointing to our Co-op. The general consensus was that "Purple Porch Co-op" didn't do enough to tell new people what we are. So, by having the word "Market" on the sign, we're hoping it might attract more people seeking good local produce, meats and baked goods. And the word "Green" is simply capitalizing on the current marketing usage (overuse, yes) of "Green" in connection with the environment. We hope the "Green" catches the attention and then they learn how the Co-op IS Green (and purple).

No worries - we're still the same Purple Porch Co-op! But the signs are hopefully a little more informative.

Yeah, Greg's been movin' around the Producers lately. If we had our druthers, everyone would stay put - make things easier. However, its a dynamic market - Producers come and go and we're not afraid to find that perfect layout that is beneficial to all. So, to help you out - that giant kiosk in the middle of the room will show you the way! The magnets representing the Producers will change - to show you where they are on a particular pickup day. If you're not sure - consult the map.

This kiosk has two other sides! One is for volunteer sign-up (please and thank you). The third side is mean to be an information board. We could use a big bulletin board if you have one lying around.

Co-op Donates Local, Healthy Food to Neighborhood Charities

Did you know that your generous contributions at check-out has allowed the Co-op to buy about $1000 (that's 3 zeroes) of food from our producers and donate to local charities like the YWCA and Broadway Christian Parish? That is Huge! Thank you to all that have "rounded up" at checkout or have contributed by "buying" a donation online (under Co-op Stuff).

Thank you also to the Producers that have sold the food at a reduced cost!

As you can imagine, since we have spent $1000, that fund has really dwindled. We hope that we can keep doing this, but we need you continued contributions. Those "round-ups" really do add up.

Talk to Your Producers - They need/want your feedback

If you have not been satisfied with an order - or you think the food is out of this world - either way - Purple Porch Producers want to know. If there was something wrong - they want to make it right. Here's a little reminder of the terms from the Purple Porch web site:

Purple Porch Cooperative facilitates the sale of products by local farmers and producers by providing an online marketplace. All transactions conducted through the online marketplace are between the user and the identified producer. As a facilitator, the Cooperative does expect Producers to follow the Cooperative's Producer Guidelines. However, because Purple Porch Cooperative is not the producer of items offered for sale, it cannot provide any warranty as to the quality of purchased items. Users of the online marketplace agree to assert any claim associated with purchased items directly against the producer.

That said, we're pretty confident that the norm is high quality food.

The above blurb isn't a cop-out on the part of the leadership or management. It is an encouragement to be connected to your food in a way that is not possible at a grocery store - or even at some farmer's markets. You have the chance to talk to the producers in person and their emails are listed on the producer pages (select the producer from the drop-down menu).

We have taken care to choose high quality producer. But everyone knows that mistakes happen. So, if after communicating with your producer, you feel like you have not reached a reasonable resolution - by all means, let the management or a Board member know. We will help.

Farm Feature and Tour: Wickert Produce and Herb Farm

Larry and Marylin Wickert raise produce, herbs, and flowers on about 3/4 of an acre at their home in North Judson. While not certified organic, they follow approved organic practices. They do not apply any chemicals. Compost is used for fertility. This is their third year (entering their second with the Co-op) and they are learning a lot about food production as they go. Check it out for yourself - join the Farm Tour this Sunday, August 28 - 2:00 pm. This is a benefit of Co-op Membership. Learn more about where and how your food is

...for the Co-op booth in the Culinary Village. Good Fun! Calling all Members - this is a fun way to spend a couple hours in South Bend. ArtBeat is a local treasure. The Co-op gets some nice exposure to a LOT of people. And, we're hoping to do what we did last year - make a little money.

Additional NEED - Your Cooperation

Our Manager Greg is taking a much needed break - so you will not see him the next two Wednesdays and Saturdays. Essential tasks are being handled by Board members - like printing invoices and making sure the door is unlocked - stuff like that. But since Greg won't be around to do the little things - your helping hand is much appreciated. We could us a couple more volunteers for those upcoming dates. Or if you see something out of place - this is your Co-op - you should feel empowered to pitch in. And by all means lets give our volunteers the patience they deserve during checkout.

Our producers bring a wonderful variety of fresh, flavorful healthy food to our market. Those of us who are not "growing our own", have an opportunity to eat well and meet (and appreciate) "our farmers". It's always nice to know where your food comes from - and who is producing it.

Also a great source for chemical-fee and environmentally considerate food in the Michiana area. Most of the products are either certified organic or have been grown/raised organically.

Five Sisters Farm is a third generation small family farm. They specialize in growing vegetables, small fruits and flowers. The farm is named after their five daughters. They do not use any chemicals or pesticides. They use only organic and sustainable practices, although they are not "certified organic" at this time.
See if for yourself - Sunday, August 7 at 3:00 pm - get a tour of their farm MAP. Parking space is limited. So, if it works for you - let's carpool - meet at the Co-op at 2:30 pm and leave by 2:40 pm.

Purple Porch brings sustainably grown LOCAL food to all its members. Starting small, it has grown and grown! South Bend has other farmer's markets--but at this one, I get to know the people who grow my food, I can ask them questions, we share recipes and ideas. I've invested in a local farmer through a CSA--each week brings new surprises in our bag. My money spent on food supports my local economy and I've had the distinct joy of learning how to cook local!

1) It leverages both the latest in online technology and social media and face-to-face, personal interaction between farmers and consumers. 2) It's a cooperative, owned by its members. 3) It's local! 4) It's got a cute name.

I have been a member of Purple Porch for three years now. I love knowing where the food I feed my family comes from, and what their growing practices are. It's important to me to support local farmers, rather than purchasing my meats, produce, and other items from big box retailers who ship their products from other areas. I know the quality of the food that I am purchasing from the co-op. My six year old loves to come to "the porch" with me and pick out foods that he likes, as well as try new things. He loves being a member of the 4-H group through the porch as well.

Our market has integrity, transparency, and concern not just for our individual bodies but for our collective well-being and our community.

Great food, good prices and great people! I love supporting our local economy.

The quality of the produce, meat,and baked goods is outstanding. The people also make a difference and our support of the local community is so important.

I can order online for Wednesday or Saturday pickup or show up on those days for extras - they are open year round!

The Purple Porch has a great location; vendors who sell great products and who are happy to talk with buyers about their operations; and a wonderful social atmosphere.

The PPC is the best because of it's "locatarian" focus, they only allow their producers to sell goods that have been grown or created within a sixty mile radius around our city. I love knowing who and where all of my food comes from and that my money is staying in my local economy.

Our producers bring a wonderful variety of fresh, flavorful healthy food to our market. Those of us who are not "growing our own", have an opportunity to eat well and meet (and appreciate) "our farmers". It's always nice to know where your food comes from - and who is producing it.

I was introduced to Purple Porch as a college student at the University of Notre Dame. Purple Porch got me and dozens of other college students involved in buying local food directly from farmers that care about their customers and care about the planet. Purple Porch is a more than a market, it is a community and I am very proud to be a part of it.

Purple Porch Co-op should be considered one of America's Favorite Markets because, of course, they have great food. They also use an innovative on-line ordering system that allows the consumers know what's available before they go and allows the producers to know what they need to bring so they know it's going to be a worthwhile trip before they leave the farm to go to the market. Also, it is more than a place that sells great quality, local food it is a community and going to pick up is less of a chore and more of a social occasion.

All local produce, meats and baked goods from people in our local community. In only two years of operation, $250,000 has come through - going directly to those that make the food - no middle man. Good value of product - good value of supporting our community. The Co-op is more than just selling - they also offer farm tours, workshops, potlucks - lots of opportunities to meet and be with other people committed to local food. Also a great source for chemical-fee and environmentally considerate food in the Michiana area. Most of the products are either certified organic or have been grown/raised organically.

The Beauty of the System

Have you seen the improved Checkout process - it is much more streamlined - fewer clicks and you get the that very important "Submit" button a lot easier.

One of the ways that Purple Porch is unique in the world of food markets is that we have an online ordering system. First of all, don't get us wrong - Producers LOVE add-ons. But take a look at some of the reasons/advantages to using the ordering system:

Less Waste - Producers know ahead of time how to prepare for Wednesday or Saturday pickup. They don't need to bring an exorbitant amount and then end up wasting food. That was an important aspect early on in the development of the Co-op.
Know What You're Getting - You can be pretty certain that you're going to get what you want when you order. If there is an item that you just love - the producer will make sure you get it when you let them know ahead of time through the ordering process. (Sure there are times when producers mis-judge when a product will be ready for harvest, or the weather doesn't cooperate - and we'll take it off your order).
Less Work For Greg - Placing an order ahead of pickup will reduce the amount of data entry after pickup. All of those extras are put in the system so we make sure the producers get paid what they're owed. And that does take time and effort.

Of course - you're welcome and encouraged to pick up extras that you didn't know about, or realized you needed. Buy, buy, buy! But just know that it does help when you place those orders.

Let's celebrate this season at Mike Keen's house with a BYOB evening of creative food and drinks using the harvest from the garden. Last year mojitos, chocolate mint martinis and more were prepared. Be creative and bring a food or drink (Doesn't have to be alcoholic)

The Purple Porch Coop will give us a brief presentation about their work.

Bring a friend and come meet others who are interested in sustainability, the environment and all things green. Last month was a record attendance, let's break that record this month!

Co-op Video

This is cool! Several Co-op volunteers are putting together a video about the Co-op. This will feature several of our producers and members - with the intention of helping new people know what to expect with the Purple Porch Co-op. This will be a brief "Day in the Life of PPC" we can highlight on our website and something you can point to when you're trying to help spread the word about the Co-op.

For Your Information: Volunteers will be filming at the Co-op on Wednesday, July 13. Lynn King, Jessica Chalmers and Kerri Engelhardt have done this kind of thing before. Please know that unless you're asked ahead of time, nobody will be stopping you to ask questions with a camera in your face. You will, however, likely be in the background doing what you do at the Co-op. Everyone should just go about their Co-op activities like they normally would - to help show new people what the Co-op looks like.

"The ArtBeat Task Force"

We need a group of people to head up the organization for our booth at ArtBeat this year (August 27). Those interested should come to a brief pre-planning meeting on July 6 - 7:00 pm. Last year we had a successful first run making watermelon slushees and iced coffees. If you helped last year, you remember being elbow-deep in watermelon. This year, we've already been given the "thumbs up" on the use of a certified kitchen in order to prepare the watermelon the night before (without bees!) Contact Jed Walls if you're interested!

New Food Dollar Reveals Farmers’ Small Share

Read the USDA Report “A Revised and Expanded Food Dollar Series – A Better Understanding of Our Food Costs” at http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/ERR114/

The American farmers’ share of the food dollar is shrinking. A recently released report by USDA states that only 11.6% of every dollar spent on food goes to the farmer.

NOTE: Purple Porch Co-op Producers receive 92.3% of the food dollar spent at the Co-op (the other 7.7% goes to the Co-op to do what we do).

USDA issues a food dollar series to measure annual expenditures by U.S. consumers on domestically-produced food. The new report called “A Revised and Expanded Food Dollar Series – A Better Understanding of Our Food Costs” updates the marketing bill series which has been discontinued.

“Only a small percentage of our food dollar actually pays for the production of the raw commodity itself,” says Dick Gallagher, chairman of the Iowa Corn Promotion Board and a Washington farmer. “I think it’s easy to see that what you pay at the store has even less to do with the price of corn.”

One more time: Purple Porch Co-op Producers receive 92.3% of the food dollar spent at the Co-op! One of the reasons we started this Co-op was to ensure that the person that raised or produced the food, was the person actually getting compensated for it. Sounds like we're on the right track.

Table to Farm Event

Fiddler’s Hearth has been partnering with Purple Porch – a Michiana family farm co-op -- to embrace the “farm to table” movement that brings restaurants closer to their local producers and puts natural, farm fresh ingredients on customer plates. But to take it a step further, Fiddler’s will bring table to farm on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Prairie Winds Nature Farm in Lakeville, pitching a large party tent and cooking up a grand tribute to our Midwest bounty.

The event begins at 4:00pm with farm tours, hay rides, and local beer and wine tasting with appetizers made from fresh seasonal ingredients. (The Michiana Home Brewers will be hosting the beer tasting.) The dinner bell rings around 6:00pm calling everyone to the party tent where Bill Bosler and Kevin Lockhart will fill the air with the lilting strains of the dulcimer and guitar during a feast that celebrates early summer in Northern Indiana. The menu will feature unique and original dishes made from local berries, fresh herbs, free range chicken, lamb, and plenty of fresh vegetables. (A vegetarian entrée option may be pre-ordered.) Tickets are available at Fiddler’s Hearth for $40, which includes farm tour, hay ride, beer & wine tasting, dinner, and server gratuities. Beer and wine will also be available for purchase during dinner.

Fiddler’s Hearth is located at 127 North Main Street in South Bend’s downtown dining and arts district. Prairie Winds is located at 21439 Osborne Road (half a mile west of highway 31) in Lakeville, Indiana.

On Saturday, June 4 we will begin having an additional pickup time (with a separate ordering time). We need volunteers to help staff Saturdays. And don't forget Wednesdays.

Please email Pat Rowan or Greg Koehler and let them know which Saturdays you can help with. Please consider two-hour shifts: 8:00-10:00 am and 10:00-noon.

Play with Children
We think every thriving community should have people of all ages, including kids. We are filled with joy when we see them playing. Our hearts sing when the play structure is filled with inventive people jumping and swinging and laughing. BUT….We want them to be safe. Volunteering to lead an activity or just hang out on the playground with the children would be very helpful.

Music at the Co-op
Do we have any Co-op member that are musicians? I know the answer is YES. Join us at the Co-op either Wednesdays or Saturdays and provide some much needed local music. And by all means use it as an opportunity to promote talents.

Fiddler’s Hearth, a buyer of local food from the Co-op, will pitch a 30’x60’ pole tent at Prairie Winds Nature Farm to cook up a four course dinner using 99% local ingredients. Bill Bosler and Kevin Lockhart will provide live music in the tent during dinner with hammered dulcimer and guitar. Prior to dinner, attendees can tour the farm and take a hay ride back to a woodland cabin where the Michiana Extract and Grain Association will be offering a tasting of home brews and local wines with an array of specialty appetizers provided by Fiddler’s Hearth (again from local ingredients). The Porch Continues to "Grow Here"

During our first two years as a Local Food Cooperative, producers have sold over $250,000 worth of food - money that stayed in our local community and not to California for unripe tomatoes.
We have maintained a steady 225 members (let's double it!)
Matt Doppke has been our cashier almost every Wednesday for two years - along with his time on the Board, that means Matt has put in well over 250 hours of volunteering - that's just a little bit over the 18 hours expected of our volunteers. We could not have managed these two years without him. Matt is the recipient of our first "Volunteer of the Year" award. Thank you Matt!

Starting with our second anniversary celebration (June 1), we're having a new promotion called "Double It" - as in - Double our membership. We've been growing for 2 years, but we know there are many more future members out there. We're at about 225 members now, so the goal is 450 members by the end of the year.

To help get us there, we've got a couple of incentives for current members.

On Saturday, June 4 we will begin having an additional pickup time (with a separate ordering time). We need volunteers to help staff Saturdays. And don't forget Wednesdays.

Please email Pat Rowan or Greg Koehler and let them know which Saturdays you can help with. Please consider two-hour shifts: 8:00-10:00 am and 10:00-noon.

Play with Children
We think every thriving community should have people of all ages, including kids. We are filled with joy when we see them playing. Our hearts sing when the play structure is filled with inventive people jumping and swinging and laughing. BUT….We want them to be safe. Volunteering to lead an activity or just hang out on the playground with the children would be very helpful.

Music at the Co-op
Do we have any Co-op member that are musicians? I know the answer is YES. Join us at the Co-op either Wednesdays or Saturdays and provide some much needed local music. And by all means use it as an opportunity to promote talents.

"The ArtBeat Task Force"
We need a group of people to head up the organization for our booth at ArtBeat this year (August 27). Last year we had a successful first run making watermelon slushees and iced coffees. The goals this year are to spread the word about the Co-op, make a little money for the Co-op and have some fun doing it! Contact Greg if you're interested!

A Big Week at the Co-op

Saturday Pickup
It has finally arrived - our first Saturday Pickup - June 4. Just when you learn the new system, we throw something else at you. Here's the scoop:

Wednesday ordering stays the same! If you order over the weekend, you'll pick that up on Wednesday.
If you'd like to pick up on Saturday, please use the ordering period of Tuesday 8:00 am through Wednesday 10:00 am.
Pickup that order the following Saturday 8:00 am - noon.
Can I do Both? YES - just place an order during both of the ordering periods.

In a nutshell:

Red = Saturday Green = Wednesday

TUESDAY 8:00 am: Saturday ordering begins
WEDNESDAY 10:00 pm: Saturday ordering ends
FRIDAY 2:00 pm: Wednesday ordering begins

PPC 4H

Calling all Purple Porch 4-H-ers (and any who want to learn more about it)! Wednesday activities begin June 1 from 5:30-6:30! We will be talking with older 4H members about their projects and how to learn more about the process and requirements. There will be a hands-on activity from the Clover Bud project book that anyone can do (i.e. paint a rock). For our youngest members, this is a chance to do your project! For older members, it is a chance to be creative, have fun, and learn more about 4H. We will be set up outside, weather permitting, or back near the checkout area if the weather is bad.

Restaurant Buying from Purple Porch

We are happy to let everyone know that a local restaurant in downtown South Bend has started to buy some of their ingredients from the Co-op! If you go to Fiddler's Hearth this week, chances are the asparagus was grown by several of our producers.

As the growing season progresses, they intend to buy more products from Purple Porch - to walk the talk of being truly local.

A word to our Members: Support businesses that are becoming a part of this sustainable food system. You can help spread the word - ask other restaurants to follow in Fiddler's lead - tell them they too can buy local through our easy-to-use online system.

This is not just about making Purple Porch successful as a business. As we get more and more buyers of our producers' food, we strengthen the system and help ensure that our small producers (our neighbors) will be able to make a life out of what they do so well.

A Visit from the Police

Don't panic! We invited them!

Greg Koehler (Manager) and Pat Rowan (Board Director) met with two representatives of the South Bend Police Department. We have not had any crime problems in the year we have been at LangLab. The Board was interested in doing what we can to be proactive against crime at the Co-op.

The Police Officers gave us some good advice about how to handle our money at checkout. We were happy to hear that overall, we're doing a good job. We have arranged for extra patrols during Co-op hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays - again, in the name of being proactive.

Probably the most common questions so far has been "Can we search by Producers?" and "Is there a search box?" These are two very good questions, considering we had that ability in the old system.

BUT...the" Search by Producers" is a likely addition soon. We have already developed a good relationship with the software designers and they have demonstrated a prompt response to any issues.

If you haven't been able to volunteer Wednesdays because it just doesn't work with your schedule - here is another opportunity to help out your Co-op.

Saturdays offer a great opportunity for growth - that's good for both you and the producers. But it will only work with a little help from our friends.

Welcome to Bluestar Produce. Some of you already ordered from them last week.

Blue Star Produce is a family owned farm located in Southwest Michigan. Blue Star Produce specializes entirely in heirloom varieties of produce, over 100 different varieties are grown on site! All completely chemical free!

Here at Blue Star, we have created key cultural practices that enable us to do what we do best, grow natural foods naturally. We grow superb quality produce that is not only nutritionally dense, but it is grown as an alternative to what is currently called conventional methods.
Our farming practices include a well-developed wholistic program. That is, we incorporate as much of the natural environment as we can into our farming methods. By incorporating elements that enhance each other and assist each other, we strive to maintain a whole healthy environment. Sowing cover crops that feed the soil, planting beneficial plants to attract beneficial insects, putting bat houses up to attract bats, keeping bee hives on the farm, and composting on a large scale. All of these things are done to create a bio-complex environment at our farms.

On top of the three acres of produce, there are 16 acres of wine grapes and about a dozen peach trees grown.

A New Online System

Important Instructions and Changes ... Please read! We advocate saving paper - but this might be a good reason to print something out. Email Greg with questions.

Steps to Get There: Go to: www.purpleporchcoop.com - under "Shop Now" (all the way to the right) click on "Shop Wednesday".

Logging In: You can peruse the products and add to your cart without logging in. When you're ready, click on the "Checkout" button (top left). You'll be prompted to log in when you enter the checkout process.

If YOU CREATED AN ACCOUNT in the old system, use the email you used to sign up. Enter in anything for the password.

If the system recognizes your email, it will prompt you to create a password - that can be the one you used for the old system (or whatever you choose).
If the system does not recognize your email - just go ahead and create a new account in "New Customer" - its quick and easy.

Submit Your Order: Big change - Your cart becomes your order WHEN you submit it - there is an actual "Checkout" process. Don't forget to submit your order! This is a big difference from the old system where the products in your cart just became your order at the end of the ordering period.

When you submit the order, it IS your order

Want more? You'll need to submit another order - no problem - You'll have two orders, but that doesn't really affect anything from an administration standpoint.

Need to remove something? You'll need to email Greg and tell him to take something off - you do not have access to the order once submitted.

Prices: the surcharge is built into the product prices. It may look like prices have increased - but in reality, the surcharge is added to each product (instead of to the entire order). For example a price of $1.04 includes the 4% on a $1.00 product.

Payment: You still pay at the Co-op - Cash, Check or EBT benefits.

As of June 4, we'll have the system do two ordering periods per week with a pickup on Wednesday and Saturday.

Five Sisters Farm is Back!

New Producer - Lehman's Orchard - Welcome!

Ralph Lehman, my school teacher grandfather, grew 50 acres of U-pick tart cherries in a sod system of weekly mowing throughout the growing season. This constant mowing of grass built the soil. We keep this in mind when we add fertilizer of manure or calcium nitrate and only apply lesser rates when the plants are actively growing. We apply 100 tons of hay mulch to different sections of the orchard per year. This typically covers 7-8 acres and 15-18 percent of the acreage is rotated every 6 years.

We grow one acre of raspberries, sweet cherries, and apricots under high tunnels not using chemicals. The purpose of the covered tunnels is to keep the crops inside dry, free from insect and fungus damage. Drip irrigation is used only along the crop rows minimizing pressure from weeds. The high tunnels protect the fruit crops from wind, hail, rain, frost, dew, and keep the inside temperatures more moderate allowing the plants and trees inside to reach their full potential. The crops from the high tunnels are sold at our farmers markets stands as, “no spray.”

New Producer - The Natural Food Center - Welcome!

The past 10 years i have gone to organic eating for my family after dealing with breast cancer. Choosing to educate myself to the knowledge of what organic foods and body care products can do for your health.

We presently live on 38 acres of no chemicals no pesticides and use organic seeds in our gardens produce. Even our herbs are organic and we use fresh herbs in a lot of our bakery items. As a naturopath myself, and a nutritionist I feel I can help others with the use of my organic soaps to my bakery items.

Happy Earth Day!
Think Globally, Eat Locally

There are many environmental reasons to buy locally grown foods:

Local food preserves open space. When farmers get paid more for their products by nearby shoppers, they're less likely to sell farmland for development.
Local food benefits the environment and wildlife. Our farms encompass a patchwork of fields, meadows, woods, streams, and ponds that provide essential habitat for wildlife. Additionally, long distance transportation of food increases air pollution.
Local food preserves genetic diversity. In industrial agriculture, plants are bred for their ability to ripen uniformly, withstand harvesting, survive packing and last a long time on the shelf, so there are only a few varieties in large-scale production. This leaves our food supply vulnerable to disease or disasater. Smaller local farms, in contrast, often grown many different varieties to provide a longer season, an array of colors, and the best flavors.
Less pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. All of Purple Porch's farmers either use organic methods or integrated pest management methods that reduce the use of synthetic chemicals entering our food and our environment.
Shorter travel time = less oil! Most of the food at the Co-op has an origin of less than 60 miles. Big difference compared with California products. Reducing our demand for oil means less pollution, less carbon, less impact.

PPC 4H Club

Purple Porch Co-op is an official 4-H club in St Joseph County and is currently signing up children ages 3 - High school for 4-H.

By participating and turning in a project for the 4-H County Fair (held the week of July ) families receive a free pass to the fair and the fun of getting their projects judged, seeing their projects on display, seeing other projects, and of course enjoying all the animals and fair food!

Sign up sheets and information are available during Wednesday pick up days from 5:30-6:30. We are asking for registrations forms to be turned in by Wednesday April 27 so that we can arrange for classes at PPC on Wednesdays and/or connect 4-H'ers with area classes in their project areas. New Producer - Granor Farm - Welcome!
Granor Farm is a family farm started of twenty eight acres in Three Oaks, Mi.

We are vegetable growers and plant over thirty different vegetables and over seventy different cultivars each summer. Strong believers in the concept of feeding the soil, not the plant, Granor Farms continually strives to explore practices that will develop the health of our land. We are sending in our application for organic certification this summer, but our practices seek to take us well beyond that label.

Our methods balance a strong commitment to the ecological and agricultural processes by which soil development and plant growth are governed with an eye towards developing the optimal modern practices. These practices; Crop Rotations, the use of Green Manures, well-reasoned and calculated Integrated Pest Management, and the true appreciation of input and output costs, under constant revision and review can develop into a sustainable and dynamic farming system.
